To 'Google' or not to 'Google' that is the question...

Okay, I've been wondering something. Does anyone (besides me) ever put your pen-name in Google (or any other search engines) to see what pops up? I do it every so often, and sometimes it amazes me the things that come up. For instance, the other day I did that under 'images' - typed in AnneM Oliver Fanfiction - and many of my banners, etc, come up under the results, as well as manips and banners made by other people for my stories that I didn't even know existed. I've found things like unauthorized translations of my stories, recommendations on tumblr, I've seen quotes from my stories used on LJ, and I saw a discussion on a forum for two of my stories... with comments both favorable and comments that weren't as nice.

I also found someone recommending one of my stories on a facebook Dramione page, yet they credited it to another writer. AND it was 'A Marriage Most Convenient' which is one of my most popular and one of my most reviewed. I have to admit, I signed into that page under my 'AnneM Oliver' name and set them straight, although there has been no comments since I did.

Anyway, I find some of this stuff disturbing, and some of it complimentary. It's a fine line, and I was wondering what all of you thought of it.

Sure, I've done it sporadically. Mostly just to see what pops up. Generally just my fan-fiction accounts and chapters in various places. My LJ, my twitter. SusanMarieR's beautiful artwork pops up, and reviews I've signed. I don't get recommended in forums much, I think. It might happen more often if I completed one of my longer WIP, but I'm not too worried about it.

It's not that I'm worried about it (although I wouldn't want info on my family posted anywhere) but I don't know that I like people using parts of my stories, or taking credit for things I did. I don't mind people making banners and things. It's scary what people can find out about you on the internet anyway. There was someone being nasty to me on another site, and my niece's husband went to his computer, typed in a few things, and found this person's real name, (even though we only knew her pen name) email address, phone number and real address. Scary. We didn't do anything with it, of course, but it gives a person something to think about...

Anyone who knows my Real Name (there's a couple of you) can guess what would pop up on Google. Lots of porn mainly. Not that I'm in any porno, just that my name sounds like porn star name. That is to say.... I'm not a porn star ok!!!

My pen name just pops up with my ff.net account and some stuff I reviewed on GE and Hawthorn and Vine.
Has anyone else noticed that the symbol & looks like a man dragging his butt across the floor?

I have before, but unless I'm super specific about it, nothing really pops up. Not sure if I'm happy or sad about the implication...
