Upload to a new fandom / category (one with no other uploads in it) and get a shiny silver kitten badge.   Upload the most, get a silver kitty and rainbow kitty.   Let the admin know if you're uploading for it.

Can be a new story or not, but must be up to standard.  Any original story with new characters, nonfiction in a new subcategory, ebook listings, musings, and graphic novels for new fandoms can all earn silver kittens too. If you're unsure if your upload is going to fit, ask us.

Silver kitten badges are said " to yield great power just like their golden brethren, such as being able to allow one to devour 100 additional calories in the summer months without gaining pounds, or helping writers to hold shinies in higher-than-normal shiny regard."

Grannie's homemade perfume didn't just smell vile, it had a secret hidden power - an odour so utterly alluring and intoxicating on a subconscious biochemical level that it never ceased to attract them.

Mary Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?   According to our experts, not very well.  The high nitrogen content found in young maidens used as fertilizer would certainly contribute to bushier foliage, but few blooms and fruits.

Ladies and Gents (and Other) of The Maple Bookshelf, I, TycheSong, challenge you thusly:
Utilize your knowledge of classic facepalm and headdesk worthy tropes and clichés to write (or parody) your very own classic romance, complete with MarySue (or GaryStu).

The Parameters of the Challenge

- The story must be at least 1000 words, and can be as long as you like.
- This challenge story can be fan-fic OR original!
- It MUST be a completed and posted story by 28 February. You are, as always, free to add to it after or write sequels, but the story must be readable as a complete work by the due date.
- You are not required to include lemons, but they are highly encouraged. This is a classic tropish romance, after all. Bosoms should heave and bodices be ripped accordingly. :-)
- You must have a Romance trope-worthy title (ie The Barbarian’s Captive, To Tame a Dark Lord, etc)
- Please continue to use proper SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). Just because this is a trope is no reason to slide the standard. They are tropes because they (allegedly) work! Trope and Parody are NOT synonymous with troll-fic or poorly written.
- On a similar note, please keep your Mary Sue in check. Don’t let her run the fic or make your readers want to strangle her too badly.
- You are welcome to join at any time during the month of February, but please sign up so that the admins know you plan to participate and can add your fic accordingly when you post. :-)
- Not your cup of tea? Head over to the forums and play with the February monthly prompts instead. :-)

The Challenge Prompts/Examples:
(These are some of the most “classic” plot tropes in both fan-fiction and original work, you do NOT have to use one of them)

1. Enemies due to family…and one of the main characters abducts the other.
2. Heroine falls for the lowly servant-who-is-really-the-Lord in disguise.
3. Marriage Law or Marriage of Convenience.
4. Time Travel (forward or back)
5. Best Friend’s Little Sister
6. Sham Betrothal Turned Real
7. Unexpected or Secret Pregnancy
8. Student/Teacher (or) Boss/Secretary etc.

To sign up, please e-mail me at TycheSong@hotmail.com or TycheSong@gmail.com with the subject heading “February Challenge.” Don’t forget to include your TMB screen name, otherwise I may not recognize you! Happy writing!

Write and exchange fic-gifts based on each other’s prompts!

How it works: When you sign up, you’ll be submitting a prompt for a fic you would like to receive for Christmas. On 15 November, you’ll be receiving a prompt from one of the other entrants. You then have six weeks to write a fic based on that prompt for them. At the end of the challenge everyone who entered a prompt should be getting a fic back from someone else!

The prompt exchange will be done by random drawing out of a hat. Writer pairing squicks will be taken into account after the initial drawing and the prompt distribution rearranged accordingly.

The Parameters of the Challenge:

- To participate you must sign up by 14 November 2012. We will be accepting stragglers and finding prompts for them, too, but there will be fewer options to choose from and you may not get as ideal a match.
- If you submit a prompt to be written, you are signing up to write a fic in return. Do not request a fic and then bail on the person waiting on one from you, please.
- The story you write must be based on the prompt you receive.
- The story must be completed by 31 December 2012. This gives you six full weeks to write the fic!
- Keep your prompts reasonable, please, and open enough to be creative with.
- The fic must be at least 1,000 words, and can be as long as you like!
- The prompts and the fics do not have to be Christmas/Holiday themed (but it is encouraged!).
- You may not request a specific author to write for or to receive your prompt.

AnneM's Monthly Challenge (July 2013): Happy Birthday!

Dear Writers,

As the very first member of 'The Maple Bookshelf' and as the first writer to contribute a story, I have been granted the honor of coming up with July's challenge. Since July is the month Harry Potter (the character) was born... and the month I was born... I decided to host a 'Happy Birthday Challenge'!

As always, I would be thrilled beyond measure to have at least ten people participate!

 The Parameters of the Challenge:

- A one shot or multi-chaptered story, each chapter 1000 words or more.

- Any fandom or an original

- Submitted no later than July 31 (which just happens to be mine and Harry's birthday, thank you very much! If anyone needs more time they only need to email Tyche and let her know two days in advance.

- Once again, the challenge is anonymous, so when you sign up, the mods will send you the ID and password so you can submit your story.

- Don't forget to rate and warn properly, and put a disclaimer on it if necessary!

Now for the prompt... you see, that's an easy one as there is only ONE prompt. But I believe everyone shall come up with something equally awesome and original - using your own interpretation of the prompt below.

The prompt is: "Facing a milestone birthday, all she (he) really wanted was one simple little wish - but often times one must be careful of what one wishes for, because often times wishes do come true."

- Of course, you don't have to use the prompt exactly as written, but you should at least use it as inspiration. I've also made up a series of challenge buttons for you to pick from. There are eight in all. The winner of this challenge will get something special from me!

Thank you to the mods for giving me this chance to host a challenge (it was an award for one of the carrot challenges) and I really hope everyone who's interested will join us this month. Happy writing! Oh, and Happy Birthday!

Tyche's Monthly Challenge: ...It's Hot in Here!
(A Team Challenge For Both Writers and Artists)

Ladies and Gents (and Other) of The Maple Bookshelf, I, TycheSong, challenge you thusly:
Write a fic in conjunction with at least one other writer, and and/or artist! The more who enter the merrier, and more exciting the fics will be!

The Parameters of the Challenge

- You MUST sign up by 14 August 2012. On the fifteenth, you will receive your teammate's names/e-mails and may begin. If you do not sign up in time, I cannot guarantee that there will be a spot for you!
- You will be teamed up based on the fandom you specify. These ARE your teammates, and that is part of the challenge; so no swapping and trading behind the scenes.
- This Challenge will be anonymous until after the voting, so once you get your teammates names/emails and story idea, mums the word! (obvious exceptions include your betas)
- Once you have your teammate's e-mails, you have until 31 August to write a story collaboratively. You can each have a different character POV, trade off chapters, or combine author efforts in anyway you like, but the deadline is the end of the month, and your story must be complete at that time. :-)
- Once you have completed your story, you may post it under your team's account (you will receive your password and account name along with your other team information on the fifteenth).
- You MAY sign up twice, once as a writer and once as an artist. If you do so, you will be assigned to two separate teams.

The Challenge Prompts:
You may quote these directly or merely use them to inspire, as you prefer.
1. "We become sad in the first place because we have nothing to do." (Hermon Melville)
2. "Holding her breath, she hid in the closet, and desperately hoped that just this once fate would cut her a break."
3. "A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn no other way." (Mark Twain)
4. "He knew the kiss would ruin absolutely everything, but he couldn't seem to help himself."
5. "Common sense is not so common." (Voltaire)
6.  "I did join the dark side, and would you know it? They weren't lying about the cookies. ______ is an amazing pastry chef."

Ladies and Gents (and Other) of The Maple Bookshelf, I, TycheSong, challenge you thusly:
Spin me a tale of life after death! Tell me of your ghosts, vampires and zombies--resurrect a character, part the veil, or have them guard as a spirit from beyond the grave!

The Parameters of the Challenge:

- The story must be at least 1,000 words, and can be as long as you like!
- This story can be a fan-fic or original work!
- As usual, it must be completed work by the end of the month: 31 October 2012.
- This is not going to be an anonymous challenge this time, so post it as you would a normal story, then inform one of the mods so that it can be properly added to the challenge category.
- One of your main characters has to have died sometime in the past. It can be a resurrected character, a ghost/spirit, a vampire, a zombie/infiri, or the whole story can take place in the "afterlife" if you wish, but the characater has to have experianced death at some point. If you have questions about what does or doesn't count, dont hesitate to e-mail me or comment and ask!

The Challenge Prompts:
(You may quote these directly or merely use them to inspire, as you prefer)

1) "What are you? A shade sent to punish me for my part in what happened? We were children!"
2) "Just because you can't touch me doesn't mean I can't feel you!"
3) "People used to believe that Revenants were the hand-picked tools of the gods."
4) "I never thought I would see you again. Do...Can the dead feel love?"
5) "Well, preferably we ride off into the horizon after sunset, but that was the general idea, yes."
6) "Don't look at me like I'm being silly! The last time I crossed a black cat, I died!"

If you have questions about the challenge, or to inform me that you have submitted your story and would like it added to the challenge, you can e-mail me at TycheSong@hotmail.com or TycheSong@gmail.com. Be sure to include your TMB screenname, otherwise I might not recognize you!

Tyche's Monthly Challenge: The Secret Santa Fic Gift Exchange!

Ladies and Gents (and Other) of The Maple Bookshelf, I, TycheSong, challenge you thusly:

- To participate you must sign up by 14 November 2013.
- If you submit a prompt to be written, you are signing up to write a fic in return. Do not request a fic and then bail on the person waiting on one from you, please.
- The story you write must be based on the prompt you receive.
- The story must be completed by 31 December 2013.
- This is a Secret Santa gift exchange, and is anonymous. Please do not ruin the surprise! Do not tell people whose prompt you received or post your gift fic under your screen name on any site before the big reveal.

How To Enter:
Fill out the template below, and e-mail it to TycheSong@hotmail.com or TycheSong@gmail.com with the subject heading “Gift Exchange.” If you have any questions about this challenge, need a prompt clarification or an extension for whatever reason, please e-mail me at the same addresses and we will work it out. :-) Thanks, and happy writing! –Tyche
